FINAL UPDATE (8:00PM AEST): GAMES CALLED OFF

Heavy rain in Lismore and Gold Coast has postponed play for the remainder of May 30.

The originally scheduled pool play games between Northern Territory vs Southern Hills Warriors (Pool A) game and Cronulla Black vs Canberra (Pool B) will not be completed.

However, the Brisbane North vs Melbourne Mets game (currently under delay and in extra innings) must be completed to determine who is the top of Pool A.

Therefore, the schedule has been adjusted to the following for Saturday 31 May:

SURFERS PARADISE

9:00AM – Resumption of Pool A Game, Brisbane North vs Melbourne Mets @ Surfers Paradise

9:45AM – Semi-Final 1: Cronulla Black vs 2A

12:00PM – Semi-Final 2: Melbourne Athletics vs 1A

LISMORE – CONSOLATION GAMES

9:00AM – Northern Territory (5A) vs Adelaide Rays (5B)

11:15AM – C2: Hills Red (3A) vs Canberra Rangers (4B)

1:30PM – C1: Eastern Phantoms (3B) vs Southern Hills Warriors (4A)

If there are any changes they will be communicated to Teams via the EO Chat and on www.baseball.com.au/juniorleague.

Field inspections will begin at 5:30AM on Saturday morning. All teams scheduled for the first game will get a phone call from a tournament official.

The winner of the tournament advances to the Senior League World Series.

There has been a further schedule amendment to both the Junior League and Intermediate League Championships, with some games returning to Lismore.

After a stretch of few days of sunshine and wind, two fields are expected to be playable in time for the National Championships.

Diamond 2 and Diamond 4 will have competition games.

However, Diamond 1 and Diamond 3 at Lismore remain closed for the duration of the tournament.

Therefore, half the games will be played in Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise. The other half will be played in Lismore, making travel time less for those involved.

All Baseball+ Broadcast Games will be on the Gold Coast at Surfers, including the finals.

Baseball Australia’s tournament manager Michael Ibbotson says this eases some of the pressure of driving to Gold Coast each day.

“It’s exciting news to receive when we were anticipating the likelihood that no games would be played in Lismore during the event,” says Ibbotson. “Some recent sun and wind have given the facility a chance to show how resilient it is.”

Notably, Lismore received about three times its monthly average of rain in the first two weeks of May, making fields waterlogged and unplayable.

“Although we are still not running with the original plan, the positive is another chance is getting a chance to showcase its facility during a National Championship,” adds Ibbotson. “Although games will now be moved off Mudgeeraba, more weather is always a chance, and if needed we sincerely appreciate that club will assist”

We thank everybody for their support and understanding as we navigate weather challenges as we make sure the kids can all “PLAY BALL” next week.

The Wanneroo Giants and Brisbane Metro will play for an Australian Senior League Championships Gold Medal on Sunday after winning their respective semi-finals today.

The winner of the Gold Medal Game goes to the USA to play in the World Series.

The 2025 Intermediate League and Junior League Championships, originally scheduled for May 28 – June 1 in Lismore, has been moved to the Gold Coast due to weather.

We have decided to add two additional hosts, with the plan to play games at Surfers Paradise Baseball Club and Mudgeeraba Baseball Club.

Please note, the new adjusted schedule below is subject to change. We will continue to assess the possibility of games being played in Lismore during the event.

Baseball+ will still provide a broadcast with commentary of one field per day of both Junior League, Intermediate League and finals for free, shifting the operation to the Gold Cast. The rest of the games can be watched on GameChanger.

It’s a decision that Baseball Australia did not take lightly but was one that had to be made due to “relentless” rain in Lismore.

As of this post, there has been 165.8mm of rain in Lismore since May 1. To put that in perspective, the average mean rainfall for Lismore in May is 68.8mm.

“With the relentless rainfall every day and the high amount of water now sitting on the fields, it feels extremely unlikely the fields would be ready to go for May 28,” says Baseball Australia events manager Michael Ibbotson.

“We have 18 teams playing for a national championship and we need to get these games in. Our best option is to pivot to the Gold Coast for now, and hope some of the fields dry up as the week progresses.”

It’s a big effort to move a national tournament on short notice.

Baseball Australia extends their thanks to the communities of the Mudgeeraba and Surfers Paradise Baseball Clubs for being able to step up on short notice.

The Lismore baseball community continues to go above and beyond, making 300+ lunches every day and driving them up to Surfers Paradise for the players.

“I’d really like to thank the Lismore baseball community for their efforts. They’ve been trying to make this work every day and this decision doesn’t come lightly or easily,” says Ibbotson.
