One day after losing due to an impressive rally by Team USA, Venezuela was on the better side of a comeback. Playing in their last second-round game at Panamerican Stadium in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico, they erased deficits of 0-5 and 6-8 to defeat Australia 9-8.

A bases loaded walk by Jose Lino with one out in the bottom of the ninth tied the game. A RBI single by Alexander Palma followed for the ending in walk-off style. Venezuela is now 3-3 in the second round of the 2011 IBAF 16U Baseball World Championship, while Australia dropped to 0-6.

Australia had the better start into the game, taking a 5-0 lead midway through the third inning. Venezuela was able to get on the board with four runs in the bottom of the third. But after tying the contest for a first time in the fourth, the team from Down Under answered with three runs in the fifth.

It was the last time they would score in the game, as reliever Victor Ramirez and Soid Marquez (W, 1-0) shut them down the rest of the way. Franklin Barreto got Venezuela within one run with a RBI single in the fifth and a solo homerun in the seventh. In the ninth he was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, setting up the grand finale for Lino and Palma.

Barreto finished the day, going 4-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI. Angel Aguilar also collected four hits for Venezuela. Corey Lyon went 3-for-4 with three RBI for Australia. Matthew Morris scored twice and drove in two.

On the mound both starting pitchers allowed five runs apiece. Lewis Thorpe (10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) did it in four innings, Victor Delgado (5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) in 2 1/3. Michael Gahan (L, 0-2) took the loss.

Australia is going to finish the tournament in eighth place in the final standings. Venezuela has to wait until the completion of all Saturday games to know, if they will play another game on Sunday.
