Women's World Cup Game 1 Report - Australia V Canada

IV Women World Cup Action - Australia v Canada
Saturday, 14 August 2010

The Australian Womens team luanched its campaign at the 2010 IBAF Womens Baseball World Cup in Venezuela with a 6-1 loss to Canada.

In front of 1200 people, the team got off to a strong start with starting pitcher Jacinda Barclay retiring the side in order.

Australia managed three base runners in the bottom of first thanks to a lead off walk to Janna Loudon and hits to Shae Lillywhite and Christina Kreppold, although could not manage to score.

Some great fielding held Canada scoreless in the second, and Australia opened its account in the second after Amy McCann scored following a lead off walk, and hits to Samantha Hamilton and Bronwyn Gell, who knocked McCann in with a line drive to left field.

However, Canada answered straight back in the top of the third with a run of their own off three hits.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning and Canada broke the game open in the fifth with five runs on three hits and one error by the Australians.

Laura Neads was solid in relief for the Australians, shutting the Canadians in the last two innings, however the Australians could not manage to put a dent in the scoreboard despite a late charge in the bottom of the seventh, and Canada ran out winners 6-1.

With the bat, Australia collected seven hits in total, and also left seven on base.
