Little League in Australia

Little League in Australia

What does the Little League World Series and your community grass roots baseball have to do with each other?..... If I said that your own community baseball team could be representing Australia at the Little League World Series, in front of a 40,000 strong crowd and televised on ESPN around the world, what would you say?....... You would probably say “Tell him he’s dreamin’”. Well that dream is about to become a very big reality for all grass roots baseball clubs in Australia.

The ABF has entered into discussions with Little League International in regards to the world’s largest organised sporting group becoming part of the Australian local junior baseball scene. In fact the ABF is now putting the final touches to its plans to possibly have Little League up and running for the upcoming summer season. This is sure to bring a lot of excitement to all junior players who are 12 and under.

The Little League concept is based around growing and rewarding community baseball. Each community association or region would create and run their own Little League competition. At the completion of that competition a Tournament team is selected from all players who participated in that competition to represent that association or region at the State Championships. If that team wins through, it will then go on to compete at the National Championships. If successful in winning Nationals they will then begin a journey that will not be forgotten.

Their next destination will be Hong Kong Disney, where they will represent Australia in the Asia/ Pacific playoffs. Representing their country playing baseball and staying in Disneyland would probably be the pinnacle of any junior player’s career, but if successful here the world stage awaits - with the World Series in Williamsport USA. That one little community has the chance to stand up in the worlds spotlight and be recognised.

That’s the difference with Little League; it’s not about the strongest and most talented players in that country. It’s about community. It’s about grass roots. It’s about time.
