World Championship Wrap-up -- Korea Wins Gold
|
In a cruel twist of fate that will have the Australian team shaking their heads for much of their 37-hour transit home from Cuba -- Korea has defeated the United States 4-3 in the Gold Medal game at the 2006 AAA World Championships.
Korea’s win was the last in a series of final round upsets that saw host nation favourites Cuba finish the tournament in 6th place – their worst ever result at a World Championship event.
For Australia, who defeated Korea 2-1 during the preliminary rounds, the final standings only add fuel to an already raging fire of disappointment.
During the tournament Australia led all countries in fielding percentage (.974) and had a very respectable 2.21 team ERA. But a lack of offensive presence, that included a 20-inning scoreless streak, ultimately proved to be the downfall of the Aussies’ 2006 campaign.
For the players, the majority of who now embark on professional careers, their time in Cuba will have taught them a great deal about high-pressure baseball under the most trying of conditions.
Regardless of outcomes, Australia’s best U/19 players have gained valuable experience that will both benefit them personally and ensure the continued development of Australian baseball in the international arena.
Onward and Upward boys!
