Australian Women's National Team - Background

The Australian women's baseball team, still relatively young in comparison to its male counterpart, has already compiled a strong record of achievement since its inception. (WWS) of baseball, with invited countries including Australia, USA, Japan and Canada.

Selected on players performances at the Australian womens championships held in Easter each year, it was first selected in 2001.

In the same year, the American Women's Baseball Federation recognised the growth on women's baseball around the world and organised the Women's World Series

It was a case of 2 steps better next year for Australia in WWS II in St. Petersburg, Florida, when they won gold after defeating Japan 11-6 in the final.

That same year, Geelong hosted a Women's International tournament in which Canada, the USA and a club team from Japan attended. A second Australian team, a development team, also participated, though it was their senior counterparts that came out on top in the final against Canada.

Held in Toronto, Canada, the inaugural Australian Women's Baseball team won bronze in this series, defeating Canada 1-0 in the play off. 

In 2003 on the Gold Coast, Queensland, the Japanese turned the tables on Australia, winning the title 4-1.

In the 2004, the IBAF recognised the rapid development of women's baseball world wide and sanctioned an official Women's World Cup to be held every two years. 

A final WWSIV was held in Uozu City, Japan, in July '04, followed immediately by the first ever Women's World Cup in Edmonton, Canada.  Australia finished fourth at both events.

The team also received many individual honours in 2004, with numerous selections in All World Teams.  Amy McCann was selected the All World team at the World Series, whilst Chelsea Forkin and Katie Gaynor were named to the World Cup All Star team.

In 2006, Taiwan hosted IBAF Women's World Cup II where Australia once again finished fourth.   Amy McCann, Simone Wearne and Shae Lillywhite received All World team selections following their outstanding performances.

In the WWC in Japan in 2008, Australia finished agonisingly close to a medal, losing by one run in the bronze medal match against the USA.  Angela Catford was the only player to be named to the All World Team.
