Cuba improved to 5-1 in the IBAF 16U Baseball World Championship and 3-1 in the second round with a 9-2 victory over Australia on Thursday evening at Romo Chavez Stadium in Aguascalientes. Australia, which had won just against Brazil in the first phase, remains winless in eighth place in the standings.

After the team from Down Under scored first with a RBI fielder’s choice by Michael Gahan in the top of the second, Cuba took control of the game with four runs in third and four in the fifth. Afterwards not much changed on the scoreboard except for a run by Yoan Moncada in the eighth and a sac fly by Corey Lyon in the ninth.

Eddy Martinez finished the day going 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. Moncada scored twice and drove in another run. Jose Daudinot collected two hits, two runs and two RBI for Cuba. Jolio Martinez picked up two RBI. Ben Shorto had two hits and a walk for Australia.

On the mound Jose Pazos (W, 1-0) dominated through seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks. Areblio Quiros pitched the last two frames to close it out. Michael Gahan (L, 0-1) was charged with the loss, conceding seven hits, eight runs (6 ER) and three base on balls in 3 1/3 innings. After him Bryce Collins and Jason Lott pretty much had the Cuban offense under control.

On Friday Australia is taking on Japan in the same stadium, but in the afternoon game. Cuba is traveling to Lagos de Moreno for a clash with host Mexico in the night game.
