Game 4 Aust VS Chinese Taipei

Cassandra Sedgman, Wednesday, 24 August 2011

Chinese Taipei (CT) opened the scoring in the 1st to take an early 1 – 0 lead. They threatened again in the 2nd with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and Shepherd, our starting pitcher, looked like getting out of the innings with no runs, but two costly infield errors with two out saw CT score an additional six unearned runs for a 7 – 0 lead.

We replied with two runs of ourselves in the bottom of the second when Maxfield got on with an error, and then Hoschke hit a towering home run over left field (the first of the entire tournament) and the score was 7 – 2.

At the top of the 4th, Shepherd moved from pitching to first base, and Zahradnik relieved him on the mound. Over the next three innings we continued to be our own worst enemy, with CT scoring two runs in both the 4th and 6th innings, and of these 4 runs, only one was earned.

This meant we were now down 11 – 2 after six innings of play, and of the 11 runs conceded, only 2 were earned, a very poor statistic in anyone’s language.

Wright came on to pitch in the 7th and they again scored 2 runs, we were held scoreless and the game was over by the mercy rule 13 – 2.

Only real highlights of the day for us were Hayes who went 3 for 3, and Hoschke’s home run.
