Australia out slugs Brazil 19-15

In a game that featured a total of 34 runs on 38 hits, Australia out-slugged Brazil 19-15 on Monday afternoon at Panamerican Stadium in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico. The marathon match lasted nearly four hours and got the team from Down Under its first victory in the 2011 IBAF 16U Baseball World Championship.

In the beginning it looked like an easy victory for Australia, as they scored eight runs in the second inning and led as much as 14-4 midway through the fourth. But Brazil kept on fighting, cutting the deficit to 11-14 after six innings, trying to accomplish the impossible comeback. Australia however had different plans, adding five insurance runs in the last two innings to seal the deal, even though Brazil brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning.

Australia’s center fielder Ben Shorto scored four runs. His teammate Zac Shepherd reached base five times, collecting three hits, two walks, three runs and three RBI. Seven players crossed the plate at least twice. On the other side Leonardo Munhoz, Luciano Takayama and Renan Ishihara had four hits apiece and combined to score six runs and drive in eleven.

On defense each of the eight pitchers in the game got charged with at least a run. When the game finished Bryce Collins (W, 1-0) ended up with the win, allowing five hits, two runs and a walk in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Marcelo Koga (L, 0-1) had to take the loss, conceding four hits, seven runs and two base on balls in one-plus innings.
