Cal Ripken Aust VS Korea

Lianne Eastty, Thursday, 18 August 2011

Game Five 17th August

The national Anthems of both teams played under a clear sky evening to decide which team progressed to the semi finals of the 2011 CRWS.

Korea came out in the top of the first and scored the first run of the game after giving up two walks and a single.  Australia was unable to reply in the 1st despite a Courtney Jones single to left field.

The second innings saw Dylan Wiggins make an outstanding diving double play catch. The Koreans manufactured a further run in the fourth, through a walk and sacrifice bunt.  Even with a Josh Digging's single and subsequent Isaac Whatson double in the bottom of the fourth, we again failed to score. Isaac Whatson highlighted once more in the 5th, with a heads up throw at second on a Korean base runner.

In the bottom of the innings, Shane Kelleher singled to third base and yet again we left a runner stranded.  We gave up four walks and two hits to the Korean’s in the final innings, allowing five runs across the plate.

The 7-0 score line was not a reflection on how competitive the game was contested.  We out hit our opposition 5 to 3. Isaac Whatson picked up the Ron Tellefsen award for the Australian player of the game.

The day finished on high note with the players, host families and supporters having a rare treat, to pick up a signing and photo with Cal Ripken together as a group.
