Rain Couldn’t dampen Australia’s Joy at silver medal finish

The Australian AAA U19 Baseball Team has created history today, securing a second-place standing at the 2010 IBAF Junior World Baseball Championships in Thunder Bay, Canada, after an unfortunate loss to Chinese Taipei 8-4 in the Gold Medal game.

This is the best-ever finish for an Australian team at this event.

The Final was a match-up no one had predicted. Team Australia earned their place in the Gold Medal game after defeating long time rivals Cuba 2-1 in their semi-final; and Taipei defeated hosts Canada to set the showdown for contention of the hotly contested title of ‘World Champions’.

Poor weather and rain delays made for a suspensful contest;

Chinese Taipei came out strong early scoring one run in the first dig when T Lin crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from H Lin. The Aussies leveled the scores in the top of the third, when Josh Matavesi scored on an error by the Taipei second baseman.

The Aussie bats ignited in the top of the fourth, when Luke Parish singled to left field, and Jake White followed with a single to right-field. Matavesi completed the inning when he homered to left-center for a triple-RBI, bringing home White and Parish and advancing the aussie’s lead to 4-1.

Taipei fought back in the bottom of the same inning, when right fielder Y Tsai crossed the plate on an RBI from C Lin.

Torrential rain ceased play in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the score resting at 4-3 in the Aussies favor, Taipei at-bat with one out, and one on-base.

Play commenced 45-minutes later and saw Taipei complete the inning by adding an additional four (4) runs on the board, after C Lin hit a triple-RBI homerun that advanced the score to 8-4; which would ultimately end the game.

CT pitcher Wei Chung-Wang earned the win; and Josh Corbitt took the loss.

The 2009/2010 season is proving to be a successful one for Australian baseball. This victory comes off the back of the Senior Men’s Australian team having recently achieved their best ever result at the World Cup, with a 5th place finish. The 4th world-ranked Australian women’s baseball team is scheduled to depart for Venezuela this week to compete in the 2010 Women’s World Cup.

The ABF would like to congratulate all the players, Head Coach Tony Harris (SA) and his staff; Glenn Williams (NSW), Graeme Lloyd (VIC), Shaun Smith (NSW), and Neil Barrowcliff (NSW) on their historic achievement.  The nation is proud of you!
