Baseball Australia is pleased to announce the 36-member 2009-2010 Australian Women's Baseball Squad.
With recent announcement that the IBAF will include women's baseball in its application to the IOC for the reinstatement of baseball to the Olympic Games, there is a strong push within the international baseball community to increase the participation and profile of women's baseball.
So regardless of the outcome of the IOC vote later this year, with the strength and popularity of women's baseball on the rise around the world, it has placed greater emphasis and importance of a long term national program in Australia.
Therefore the primary focus of this squad will be long-term preparation for the 2010 IBAF Women's World Cup and beyond, a process that will begin with a domestic training platform and national training camp to be held later this year.
At the healm once again is Manager John Gaynor (NSW), with Dominic Ruggiero (VIC) returning to the team as Assistant Coach after also filling the role in 2004-2006. 2008 Pitching Coach Tim Ballard (VIC) also returns, whilst Anne-Maree Adams has once again been named Executive Officer (QLD).
The squad features a great mix of youth and experience, with fifteen players named from the team which narrowly missed the bronze medal at the 2008 World Cup in Japan.
Included are six players who have featured at all three previous World Cups (2004-06-08) in Katie Gaynor (NSW), Samantha Hamilton (VIC), Shae Lillywhite (VIC) Tahnee Lovering (NSW), Amy McCann (VIC) and Renee Straumietis (NSW). Hamilton, Lillywhite, Straumietis and Melissa Whittaker (VIC) are also now the only players to have been named in every squad since the inaugural selection in 2001.
Also, whilst New South Wales and Victoria make up the majority of selections, it is promising to once again see exciting talent continuing to emerge from Western Australia and Queensland.
The squad also features five members who have been nominated on the "Disabled List" who have been selected in recognition of past performances. These players are currently performing injury rehabilitation and still remain part of the long-term development of the squad.
