Aussie Women Trounce Hong Kong in Game 1 of Women's World Cup

In the opening game of the 2006 Women's World Cup, which was broadcast live on television across Taiwan, , Australia sent an ominous warning to the rest of competition with a 22-2 trouncing of Hong Kong.
 
In what was truly an awesome hitting display, Renee Straumietis was the stand out with 3 hits, 2 doubles and 2 sacrifices.  Katie Gaynor collected 3 hits including a 3B and 4 RBIs, whilst Amy McCann 3-4, 3B, 4 runs, and Samantha Hamilton 3 hits were also standouts.  In total 8 players collected 2 or more hits. 
 
On the mound, Terina Stokes started for the Roos and pitched 3 1/3 innings - allowing 2 runs and striking out 3.  17 year old Kimberley Schulte made her debut for Australia coming in to relieve, striking out 3 across 1 2/3. coming in to relieve, striking out 3 across 1 2/3.
 
In other Day 1 games, in a major upset, Canada beat beat USA 5-2 whilst Japan defeated Chinese Taipei 9-0.
 

Australia will take on Chinese Taipei in the night match of Day 2, with Canada to meet to meet Cuba and Japan clashes with Hong Kong.
